Being a volunteer teacher of Homeschool ACES Coop is both a privilege and responsibility. We
recognize that each parent has abilities and skills to teach his or her own children and to contribute to the coop. However, as a ministry of New Life Church, we need to ensure that Biblical teaching and modeling is characteristic of our coop. We therefore require teachers of ACES to meet certain key qualifications.
Volunteer teachers at the Homeschool ACES coop will be parents, grandparents, or adult children of the coop families. Teachers will need to meet all four qualifications listed below. Teachers who meet only the first three qualifications will work under a coordinator who meets all four qualifications. Likewise, an adult child of a coop family can teach in the coop only under the supervision of a coordinator who meets all four qualifications.
- Not be young in the faith. Teachers must have an understanding of the basics of the Christian faith. And while none of us is perfect, teachers must demonstrate growth and maturity in applying Christian truths to daily living. This includes husbands loving their wives (Ephesians 5:25); wives submitting and respecting their husbands (Ephesians 5:22); having children who believe (Ephesians 6:4; Titus 1:6); getting baptized (Matthew 28:18-20); being involved in the life and ministry of a local church (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 3:10-11; Titus 2:1-15; Hebrews 10:24-25); turning away from sinful conduct (Galatians 5:19-21,23); and having the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) increasingly evident in one’s life.
- Have time to teach. We believe that parents should first be committed to having orderly households (Ephesians 5:22-6:9) and to teaching their children well at home (Ephesians 6:4) before making commitments to teach outside the home. Teaching in the Homeschool ACES coop requires an investment of time and energy. We are cognizant that families with young children, single parents, or dual-career families may be in a season of life that does not allow them enough time and energy to devote to teaching in the coop. The coop board shall therefore be very careful before asking parents who are in such seasons of life to teach in the coop.
- Be qualified to teach the subject. Teachers must demonstrate competence in teaching an assigned subject, either through having formal educational qualifications (e.g., degrees or certificates), having a long-time interest in a particular topic (e.g., hobbies), or experience in teaching the subject in different settings.
- Be missionally involved in New Life Church. Given that the Homeschool ACES Coop is part of the larger ministry of New Life Church, teachers must be members of and be involved in a meaningful way in New Life Church. Examples of missional involvement include (but are not limited to) tithing, service in the children’s or youth ministry, participation in men’s or women’s groups, and involvement in small churches or home churches at New Life Church.
Guest teachers can teach at the coop but only under the supervision of a regular coop teacher. Guest teachers need not be parents, grandparents, or adult children of coop families. Each guest teacher will teach only on occasion, will not teach a substantial part of a class, and will not be paid. The regular coop teacher is responsible for conducting due diligence on the background and qualifications of the guest teacher.
The coop board reserves the right to interview and approve all teachers. While the coop board entrusts the choice of curriculum to each coop teacher, the coop board reserves the right to review the topics covered and materials used in each class. |
